WILPF Portland Actions & Goals

  • UNIVERSAL DISARMAMENT and the redirection of military funds to meet human and environmental needs.
  • CHALLENGING CORPORATE POWER We oppose the activities of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). We believe the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) will greatly increase economic disparity.
  • SELF DETERMINATION for all people, with emphasis on the Middle East and the Americas.
  • WOMEN IN BLACK We stand in solidarity with Women in Black at vigils worldwide opposing war.
  • WOMEN CHALLENGE U.S. POLICY: BUILDING PEACE ON JUSTICE IN THE MIDDLE EAST We are examining U.S. policy in the Middle East and believe that women's active participation can bring peaceful, democratic resolution to conflicts.
  • UNITING FOR RACIAL JUSTICE We support National WILPF’s Truth, Reparations, Restoration and Reconciliation campaign.
  • ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY and correct inequities in our justice system.
  • SAVE THE WATER Water is the most precious resource of the natural commons and sustains all life. Clean and affordable water for every person on earth is a basic necessity.
  • ABOLISH NUCLEAR WEAPONS The U.S. must ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. We oppose the National Missile Defense (Star Wars).
  • HANFORD NUCLEAR RESERVATION We advocate a thorough clean-up and closure with monitoring into perpetuity.
  • LANDMINES U.S. must join the Mine Ban Treaty, support mine victims and cleanup efforts.
  • COLOMBIA & THE ANDEAN REGION We oppose U.S. funds for the Colombian military in the guise of a “war on drugs”.
  • SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS We call for the closure of this U.S. Army school at Ft. Benning, Georgia which trains Latin American militaries in counter-insurgency and torture.
